Transformation tells the stories of people who are combining personal and social change in order to re-imagine their societies. Radical changes in our relationships and institutions are essential to challenge today's predominant ethics of competition, growth and power. We believe that love, equality and social justice are the principles on which new forms of politics, economics and social activism can be built. You can find out more about our philosophy here.
We publish ethical, independent journalism and analysis on these themes, providing a forum to explore how to put these principles into practice.
Hosted by openDemocracy magazine, Transformation has built up a solid readership since its launch last July. Our articles have been accessed over 700,000 times.
We are now looking for an intern to help support the section, especially on social media.
You will need to have a genuine interest in the themes Transformation covers. The role is paid at London Living Wage, but is unlikely to lead to a full time job, as we are funding based.
We know that internships can be rubbish, so we won't patronise you, either by treating you as a less important member of the team, or by asking you to be “self-starting” or “can-do”. We also won't ask you to make us tea (particularly as we live on opposite sides of the world).
We will endeavour to make your time on Transformation as interesting as it can be, to enable you to work within your own areas of interest (within reason) and to offer you support where needed.
Tasks:
A. Expanding the reach of Transformation through social media and outreach. You'll need to have a good grasp of analytics and ideas about how to improve what we're already doing.
Social media includes: using Twitter, Facebook, Google +, Reddit, and any other sites intelligently and effectively
Outreach includes: compiling and maintaining a database of names, structured by interest, in order to email out relevant articles in a targeted way. It also includes attracting subscribers to our weekly email.
B. Sourcing new contributors, particularly outside of the United States and United Kingdom. We are hoping to expand our range of writers, and are particularly looking for more contributors from the Global South.
C. Monitoring other related websites and publications to identify opportunities for potential cross-publication.
D. Researching new potential funders outside of the US.
E. We'd like you to have something concrete to take away from your internship. If you're interested in journalism/editing, we can help you to produce and/or commission one or two pieces for the section.
Time commitment:
This is an 8-10 hours a week role for 10-12 weeks, though spreading the same amount of time over a longer period is also possible. You can be located anywhere, but if you're in London it may be helpful.
This is a freelance role, and you will have to provide your own equipment.
How to apply:
If you're interested, send a CV, less-than-one-page cover letter, and a writing sample to both Mike Edwards on edwarmi@hotmail.com and Ray Filar on ray.filar@opendemocracy.net. There's no person spec aside from the areas already mentioned, but we'd be interested to hear about any involvement in campaigning or activism – or if you like give us a brief couple of sentences with your take on transformation as we have outlined it.
